Why Mineral Oil Isn’t the Only Answer for Sensitive or Healing Skin

The "trusted" bottle on the pharmacy shelf
For decades, one product has dominated the conversation around scars, stretch marks, and sensitive skin. It’s often the first thing recommended after surgery, pregnancy, or skin trauma — familiar, affordable, and widely available.
But familiarity doesn’t always mean suitability.
When skin is healing — whether from injury, inflammation, hormonal changes, or procedures — its needs are very different from everyday moisturisation. And this is where many mass-market formulas fall short.
What mineral oil actually does
Mineral oil is an what we call an 'occlusive'. It sits on the surface of the skin and reduces water loss. That can be helpful in certain situations, especially where the skin barrier is severely compromised.
But mineral oil is biologically inert. It doesn’t actively nourish the skin, support regeneration, or contribute nutrients that skin needs during repair. It protects — but it doesn’t participate.
For some skin types, especially sensitive or reactive skin, this can feel like a temporary fix rather than meaningful support.
Healing skin needs more than a seal
Skin that’s recovering is working hard beneath the surface. Cellular turnover increases. Inflammation needs calming. Micro-circulation matters. The barrier needs rebuilding, not just covering.
This is where plant-based oils and botanical extracts offer something fundamentally different.
Botanical oils contain fatty acids, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds that the skin recognises and uses. Rather than simply sealing moisture in, they can support the skin’s own repair processes — gently, gradually, and with greater compatibility.
Why I formulated differently
As a Traditional Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist, I work with healing every day — not just skin, but the body as a whole. I see how tissue responds after surgery, how scars behave over time, and how inflammation lingers when the body isn’t properly supported.
The Targeted Skin Renewal Oil was developed in response to this clinical reality. It’s designed for skin that has a story — skin that has been stretched, cut, inflamed, or altered — and needs support, not just shine.
Rather than relying on a single occlusive base, the formula combines lightweight, non-comedogenic (poor clogging) plant oils with botanicals traditionally used to support tissue integrity, calm inflammation, and encourage renewal.
A different philosophy of care
This isn’t about rejecting mineral oil entirely — it has its place. It’s about recognising that healing skin deserves more than a one-size-fits-all solution.
For those seeking a more considered approach — one rooted in clinical experience, botanical knowledge, and respect for the skin’s natural processes — there is another option.
